Cicilline Poll Tests Providence Mayorial Waters (posted January 20, 2002)
Likely Providence mayorial candidate David Cicilline is testing voter support in a new poll taken the weekend of January 12-13. The survey tests three election scenarios: 1) current Mayor Buddy Cianci versus Cicilline (if Cianci is exonerated in his federal corruption case), 2) Cicilline versus former Mayor Joe Paolino and City Council President John Lombardi (if Cianci leaves office), and 3) a crowded field of Cicilline, Paolino, Lombardi, Angel Tavares, Frank Caprio, Sr., and David Igliozzi.
In addition to vote preferences in these three scenarios, Cicilline's survey tested a variety of campaign messages, such as voter views about open, competitive bidding, increased accountability, crackdown on crime, community policing, an elected school board, teacher training, taxing non-profit organizations, taking no contributions from city employees, legalizing gay civil unions, banning handgun possession, and economic development plans for specific neighborhoods.
