Carcieri Says "Too Soon" to Think About Re-Election (posted April 11, 2004)
Republican Governor Don Carcieri says it is "too soon" to think about running for re-election in 2006. Appearing on the WJAR-TV show "10 News Conference", Carcieri stated that the 2006 election was "the last thing I am thinking about." The state is poised for good things in the future, he noted, and he is working to bring policy changes to fruition. When asked directly whether he intended to run again, he responded, "we'll see. It is too soon to worry about."
In other statements, the governor said he was on good terms with members of the General Assembly, even though he disagrees with some of them on policy issues. "I know more legislators on a first-name basis than any recent governor," he claimed.
Carcieri also repeated his call for a better partisan balance in the General Assembly. "What the whole state is seeing is the imbalance" between Republicans and Democrats, he said. "The imbalance in the legislature is not a healthy thing."
