Jennifer Lawless to Run Against Langevin for Congress (posted April
13, 2005)
Brown University Political Science Professor Jennifer Lawless has announced
her intention to run for Congress in the Democratic primary against
incumbent James Langevin. On April 12th, she distributed an email to
colleagues saying "it is my research on women and politics that served
as the catalyst for this decision." Lawless holds a Ph.D. from Stanford
University and she joined the Brown faculty in Fall, 2003. She has written
extensively on women and politics, and teaches a course on campaigns
and elections.
On April 6, she ran a column in the Providence Journal criticizing Representatives
Langevin and Patrick Kennedy for not challenging Senator Lincoln Chafee.
In it, she complained that neither chose to run for Senate and criticized
them for valuing job security over helping Democrats reclaim the Senate.
