Matt Brown Undecided on Future Election Plans (posted April 25,
2004)
Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown is undecided on his future
election plans. Appearing on the WJAR-TV show "10 News Conference"
with Bill Rappleye, Brown ducked questions about whether he would seek
re-election or run for the U.S. Senate in 2006 against Lincoln Chafee. When
asked directly about a possible Senate bid, Brown said, " I have a
four-year term...I have plenty of time just to focus on doing my job."
Rappleye pressed him to name the Democrat who would represent the strongest
challenger to Chafee. Brown answered "I don't know. That is a question
for Darrell West or another political scientist....I haven't seen any
analysis."
Brown confirmed that Democratic activist Mark Weiner is helping him raise
money and said his last fundraising party brought in $10,000.
