New U.S. Attorney Has No Political Ambitions (posted August 23, 2004)
Newly-named U.S. Attorney Robert Corrente says he has no political ambitions.
Appearing on the WJAR-TV show "10 News Conference" , Corrente
said "I don't have any political ambitions and hope I never have any."
Although he is a registered Republican, Corrente indicated he has supported
candidates of both parties and does not have a partisan agenda
The U.S. attorney praised the court of appeals for upholding the conviction
of former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci. Corrente said he was not surprised
the appelate court upheld Cianci's conviction. Corrente also indicated
he thinks there is an uneven playing field in Rhode Island politics
and that public corruption remains a top priority for his office.
When asked about organized crime in Rhode Island, Corrente said "they
are still out there. [But] there aren't as many of them out there."
