GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Running 30-40 Points Behind York and Whitehouse (posted August 24, 2002)

Rhode Island Republican gubernatorial candidates Jim Bennett and Don Carcieri are running significantly behind Democratic aspirants Myrth York and Sheldon Whitehouse. Providence Journal reporter Scott MacKay said on the WPRI-TV show "Newsmakers" today that state Democrats undertook a poll that showed either Republican running "30 to 40 points" behind either York or Whitehouse. Details on the survey were not released, but if the survey is accurate, it demonstrates that either York or Whitehouse would have a major edge if the general election were held today.
