Missouri Defeats Casino Proposal (posted August 4, 2004)
Missouri voters yesterday defeated a ballot measure designed to legalize
riverboat gambling in the resort town of Branson by 55 to 45 percent.
Even though proponents spent $10 million in a media campaign, the ballot
measure lost in almost every county in the state. According to news
reports in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, casino proponents "blamed the
loss on their opponents' tactics, such as citing crime data from Las
Vegas." Voters also complained about the millions of dollars spent on
television ads and the flood of direct mail flyers into their homes.
