Chafee Leads Weygand 50-34 in Ch12 Poll (posted October 17, 2000)
A new Channel 12 survey shows Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee with a commanding lead of 50 to 34 percent over Congressman Robert Weygand in the race for U.S. Senate in Rhode Island. Conducted with 408 Rhode Island voters between October 10 and 13, the survey reveals that little has changed in the race over the past six weeks. A Brown University survey conducted in late August showed Chafee with a lead to 48 to 31 over Weygand.
In addition, the latest campaign finance reports demonstrate that Weygand is at a major disadvantage in terms of cash on hand. Whereas Chafee has $979,762 left, Weygand has $270,276 available. Between Chafee's lead in the poll and his money to run television spots, Weygand enters the stretch run as a distinct underdog.
