U.S. Senator Arlene Violet?
Is the U.S. Senate in WHJJ radio talk show host Arlene Violet's future? A poll in the Rhode Island field this week is testing her vote-getting power as an independent candidate in three-way races between her, Republican Lincoln Chafee, and Democrat Robert Weygand as well as a separate match-up of her, Chafee, and Democrat Richard Licht.
When asked on May 27th about the poll, she said she was aware of the survey and indeed was interested in the race. "I'm seriously thinking about it," she told a caller who raised the subject of her possible Senate candidacy. The talk show host indicated she would make a decision on whether or not to run by the end of August, 1999.
Violet last served the state in elective office as attorney-general. She was defeated for re-election in 1988 by Democrat James O'Neill.
No word on who sponsored the survey.
