Top 1998 Gambling Money Recipients (posted August 29, 1999)
A General Accounting Office report has found that "political contributions from gambling interests have skyrocketed by 400 percent in just six years" from 1992 to 1998. Whereas pro-gambling interests donated just $1.1 million to federal candidates in 1992, by 1998 the total had risen to $5.7 million. Much of the increase is due to large "soft money" contributions to the national party committees. The table below lists the top 1998 direct gambling contributions to members of Congress, based on figures published by Roll Call newspaper and the GAO.
