Violet Blasts Providence Journal (posted September 22, 1999)

Radio talk show host and possible independent U.S. Senate candidate Arlene Violet blasted the Providence Journal on September 21 for its front page coverage of Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci. Speaking on her radio talk show, Violet criticized the newspaper for reporting that Cianci was denying a rumor that he was about to resign office. "It is yellow journalism," she complained. Reporters should not force public officials to deny something that is only a rumor, she said. The press should set a higher standard for itself in its coverage, she argued.
