Clinton Fatigue (posted September 8, 1999)
Clinton fatigue has surfaced as a major issue in the presidential campaign, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC News survey. Fifty-three percent of voters said they were "just plain tired" of Clinton. This view was especially prevalent among moderates and independents who are the crucial swing voters in the 2000 elections. The poll of 1,526 adults was conducted August 30 to September 2, 1999 and had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
More than half say they do not have "confidence in Gore because of his service" in the Clinton Administration. The president himself continues to have a "high job approval rating but low personal standing."
The results illustrate why Texas Governor George W. Bush maintains a big lead over Gore. In a trial heat, Bush is ahead by 56 to 37 points. Seventy percent see Bush as a strong leader, while only 38 percent believe that about Gore.
